With black frames and copper accents, this industrial meets Scandi style extension is a must-have aesthetic. Painted open bricks with pendant lights complement the black units and window frames, while the glass ceiling of this infill keeps the space light and bright.
The Ground Side Infill
This homeowner called on us to build a ground side infill, full of natural lighting to create a big open-plan kitchen and dining area so they can easily interact with their family members during family gatherings as well as entertain guests while they cook dinner.
To bring this ‘side infill’ to life, our team first needed to carry out some pre-design assessments to get a comprehensive understanding of the project which included; getting in a Structural Engineer to provide detailed drawings to help determine a building project’s durability, and undertaking an in-depth inspection of the drainage system with a CCTV drainage survey.
Once done, we were able to propose a design that included as much extra space as possible, before working to obtain planning permission.
Finally, as this homeowner house had a shared wall with their neighbours, we also needed to serve a ‘party wall’ notice to secure approval of works. We speak of party walls when one wall or shared property boundary with a neighbour. When that is the case, you need to get the permission from that neighbour to undertake the renovation.
Living Room Renovation
In order to have more space in the living room, and for it to be connected with the brand-new kitchen and dining area, our team also worked on renovating this already existing ground-floor space.
To do this, they swapped the bedroom, which would have been next to the kitchen, with the living room. The amendments included; opening up the existing wall between the living room and the ground side infill, as well as the wall to the hallway, and then installing timber vertical decorative battens on either side of the room.
The resolution
Once we managed to tick off everything in terms of planning, all we needed to do was hand over our designs to the appointed builders and let them bring our drawings to life. This resulted in a stunning ground floor side infill, equipped with lots of glass glazing for maximum light and a large open plan dining room, as per the homeowners request.
