These London homeowners in Wandsworth wanted to create a more open layout, which still retained the original character of the building. Here’s how our architects help bring their home dreams to life, all with the help of a small but mighty extension.
These Londoners came to us knowing they wanted to use a side return to extend their dining space. In order to create this extra wiggle room, there were quite a few walls that needed to be opened out, so that a new dining room could be incorporated into the rear of the property. Alongside this, the owners were also very keen to bring much more natural light into their home.
Because the homeowners were after a modest side infill, we were able to reflect this in the budget. We decided to do more with less, focusing on the little touches that help improve a kitchen dining area, such as a more intuitive layout, having a flexible hosting area, and strategically adding skylights, so that these home cooks are never left squinting while preparing for their next dinner party.
The end result is a stunning Wandsworth addition. The stepped layout between kitchen/diner to the living room, brings together a quirky charm to the property, while the broken-up layout also allows the two spaces to feel both open yet distinct. Our architects envisioned a new L-shaped kitchen counter, where meals could be both prepared and enjoyed, thanks to the addition of a breakfast bar. Now, these homeowners can dine small or big, as our small yet mighty side infill extension has brought in enough space to fit a dining table. Our newly added skylight complements the already existing french doors, meaning from top to tail, this property now has plenty of that all important natural light they were seeking from the start.

This charming Wandsworth property was really fun to work on. I loved the challenge of unlocking as many new features as possible, while also juggling a restrictive budget and footprint. Once we had reached a design the homeowners were happy with, we moved them into our building regulations service, where we helped them secure the technical details needed for construction.
