Project details

With an unloved dining room taking up so much space, these homeowners wanted to use a rear extension to open up their ground floor and create a multifunction space for the family. Here are all the stylish design features our team packed into this modern home extension project!

Multifunctional space

With this rear extension, we were able to significantly increase the square footage of this property, meaning we could dedicate the rear towards more multifunctional living. Our own Happy Homes research shows that having an adaptable space is a leading factor in household wellbeing, so we wanted to make sure this new space could be a little bit of everything for everyone. Included in the floorplan, we have brought together cooking, dining, and relaxation into one. This not only allows the family to spend more time together but creates large areas of adaptable space. Perfect for get-togethers, homeworking, workouts, and much more!

Downstairs WC

When you have so much entertaining space to play with, you also want to make sure the practical concerns are also taken care of. That’s why we also squeezed in a new downstairs toilet. Giving guests a place to use without them needing to wander up into the more private upstairs level. A downstairs WC is also fantastic for the summer months when you don’t want to be rushing from the garden, up a flight of stairs when nature calls.

One of the benefits of an open plan space is that it allows light to travel throughout the room. However, a big space needs a lot of light to keep it feeling bright. This is why we not only added large skylights onto the flat-roofed extension, we also included large crittall style feature glazing at the rear. By placing the french doors next to the window, it creates a continuous effect but without the price tag of floor to ceiling glass!
