With an unloved dining room taking up so much space, these homeowners wanted to use a rear extension to open up their ground floor and create a multifunctional space for the family. Let's take a look at the stylish design features we managed to pack into this modern home extension project.
A new multifunctional space
With this ground-floor rear extension, we were able to significantly increase the square footage of this property, which meant we could dedicate the extra space towards more multifunctional living. Our own Happy Homes research showed us that having an adaptable space is a leading factor in household wellbeing, so we wanted to make sure this new space could offer something for everyone.
That's why our floorplan combined cooking, dining, and relaxation. It not only allowed the family to spend more time together, but it created large areas of adaptable space perfect for get-togethers, homeworking, workouts, and more!
An easily accessible downstairs WC
When you have so much entertaining space to play with, you also want to take care of the practical concerns. That’s why we also squeezed in a new downstairs toilet, giving guests a place to use without them needing to wander upstairs into the more private levels of the house. A downstairs WC is also fantastic for the summer months when you don’t want to rush in from the garden and up a flight of stairs when nature calls.
Enviable glazing
One of the benefits of an open plan space is how it allows light to travel through a room. Big spaces also need a lot of light to keep it feeling bright, which is why we not only added large skylights onto the flat-roofed extension but large Crittall-style feature glazing at the rear. Placing the French doors next to the window also creates a continuous effect without the price tag of floor-to-ceiling glass!
